Augusta Burke Holly Glidden

June 20, 1924 — July 21, 2013

Augusta B. “Holly” Glidden June 20, 1924 – July 21, 2013 Holly (Burke) Glidden, 89, of Dedham, MA and Franconia, NH, passed away at home in Perryville, RI surrounded by her family whom she so loved. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of the late Alan T. and Augusta (Stradella) Burke, and sister of the late Frances Warden and John Burke. She was the beloved wife of the late Stephen H. Glidden whom she married in 1949; the couple settled in Dedham where Holly continued to live after Steve’s passing until 2011, when she moved to South Kingstown, Rhode Island. Holly graduated from Holland Hall School in Tulsa and Wellesley College, where she was a loyal alumnus of the class of 1946. She was a reading specialist at Dedham Country Day School for twenty years where she taught her students with unflagging encouragement and warmth. Holly volunteered her time faithfully for many organizations, including Meals on Wheels, the Dedham Community House, and Elder Services. She had a deep appreciation of nature, whether exploring in the woods and mountains of Franconia, beach combing, or tending her gardens. She was a natural athlete and relished a good game of bridge with her friends. She also enjoyed sharing the theatre, symphony, and museums. An avid reader, she was always eager to learn. Above all, she brought great joy and generosity to her wide circle of friends and her family through times of both adversity and abundance, holding all in the warmth of her smile. Holly was the loving mother of her son Steve and his wife Michelle of Marshfield, MA; her son Alan and his companion Jeanne Sabin of Point Judith; her daughter Annie G. Kammerer and her husband Gregory of Perryville; the devoted grandmother of Willa and Grey Kammerer and Eric and Aubrey Glidden; and a beloved aunt to a niece and many nephews, and their spouses and offspring. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, August 9 at St. Paul’s Church in Dedham, MA at 1 PM. Burial will be private. Donations in Holly’s memory may be made to the Wellesley Students’ Aid Society, 106 Central St., Wellesley, MA 02481; Hospice and Home Care of RI, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904; or Copper Cannon Camp, P.O. Box 124, Franconia, NH 03580.
