Arlene P. Kennedy, 62, passed away peacefully at the Westerly Hospital surrounded by her family and friends on May 28, 2010. She was the beloved companion of Peter McClanaghan of Narragansett. Born in Providence and raised in East Greenwich, she was a daughter of the late Eugene R. and Mae K. (Bordelon) Kennedy. Arlene worked as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at the Westerly Hospital for the past 22 years. She will be remembered by her patients and co-workers as a dedicated and compassionate caregiver. She was a strong advocate for patient rights and comfort. Prior to becoming and RN, Arlene worked with Narragansett and South Kingstown Police Departments as a dispatcher, while attending nursing school and raising two young children. She graduated Magna Cum Laude form the University of Rhode Island, School of Nursing in 1985 and she was a member of the International Honor Society of Nursing. Besides her companion she is survived by a son, Jay Knowles, his wife Heather of Richmond; a daughter, Amy Knowles, her husband William Tucker of Wakefield; her four adoring grandchildren, Haley and Hannah Tucker, Ethan and Brandon Knowles; a brother, Wayne Kennedy of Providence; and a sister, Dr. Mary Lynne Kennedy of West Greenwich. She was predeceased by a sister Janet Kennedy. Visiting hours will be 9 – 10:30 AM, Tuesday at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street,Wakefield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 864 Pt. Judith Road, Narragansett. Burial will follow in New Fernwood Cemetery, Kingston. Memorial donations may be made to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, 593 Eddy Street, Providence, RI 02903.
