Antony C. Brother O'Connor

Brother Antony C. O’Connor, FSC, 89, of Christian Brothers Center, Narragansett RI, died on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Briarcliff Manor Nursing Home where he has been a resident. Brother Antony was born in Newport, RI on May 28, 1923, son of the late Norah F. and Michael O’Connor. He was the brother of the late Ellen Keeley. He is survived by his brother-in-law Joseph Keeley of Newport and two nephews, Patrick Keeley of Newport and Robert Keeley of North Carolina and their families. Brother Antony entered the Brothers of the Christian Schools at Barrytown, NY in 1940 and received the religious habit in September of that year. He pronounced his final vows in 1948. Brother Antony received a BA in English from Catholic University. He earned an MA and a PhD degree in English at the University of Santo Tomas and received an M.L.S. in Information Systems from Long Island University. Brother Antony began his teaching career at Bishop Loughlin in Brooklyn. From there he taught at several schools in the NY area as well as in De La Salle College, Manila, Philippines and the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico. In addition, Brother Antony served as Executive Vice President at Bethlehem University in Bethlehem, Israel and taught at Salve Regina University in Newport, RI from 1983 to 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 9:00am at Our Lady of the Star Chapel, Christian Brothers Center, 635 Ocean Road, Narragansett, RI. Burial will be in the Brothers' Cemetery on the Center grounds. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 3-5:30pm at Christian Brothers Center.
