Antonio “Jay” Joseph Sciola, Jr., 91, of South Kingstown, Rhode Island passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, February 14th, 2025. Jay was the beloved husband of Barbara J. (Baton) Sciola. Born in Peace Dale, Rhode Island, Jay was the son of Antonio Sciola, Sr. and Lucy (Angrisani) Sciola.
Besides his wife, Jay leaves behind his son, Raphe A. Sciola, his daughter, Jodi L. Sciola, and his grandson, Julien A. Sciola, all of South Kingstown. Jay is also survived by his brother-in-law, Wendell Futch, of Lakeland, Florida, as well as many nieces, nephews, special friends, and coworkers. Jay is predeceased by his brother Clemente Sciola, his two sisters, Ethel Williams and Magdalen Futch, and his eldest daughter, Rebecca Sciola.
Jay attended South Kingstown High School where he excelled in various sports. He started working for the State of Rhode Island in 1950 before joining the Air Force in 1952. After his discharge from his military service in Laredo, Texas, he returned to Rhode Island to work for the state at the University of Rhode Island. He and Barbara wed on January 9, 1960 and shared 65 years together filled with many happy memories. Jay retired from his position with the state in 2020, for a total of 70 years, with the distinction of being the longest serving state employee.
The things most important to him were family, friends, work and spending as much time as possible on Salt Pond crabbing, scalloping, quahogging, and fishing.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, February 21, 2025 from 4pm-7pm in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, RI 02879.
A Celebration of Life will be held sometime this summer at a date to be determined.
