Anthony J. Rose, Jr.

March 3, 1930 — March 22, 2016

Anthony “Tony” J. Rose, Jr., 86, passed away on 03-22-2016 at South County Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was a graduate of Bound Brook High School in New Jersey and attended R I State College (URI) class of 1954. He received his honorary degree in 1991. A local business man, Tony was the past president of Technical Industries, Inc. and River Bend Athletic Club both of Wakefield. He was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps and served on the U.S.S Wasp in the Korean War, 2 years active duty and 6 years reserve and was discharged as a Corporal. Mr. Rose was predeceased by his high school sweetheart and wife of 52 years Kathleen A. (Salkay) Rose; brothers, Charles, Robert, J. Michael, William, and his sister Dorothy Csuha. He is survived by his sisters-in-law Nancy Rose and Muriel Rose of New Jersey; his children Kimberly A. Rose, Melissa B. Rose, Lauren E. Poirier & husband Kevin, Eric A. Rose & wife Sharon, all of Wakefield, grandchildren Michael A. Fragomeni, Ryan D. Poirier, Hans A. Stuting, Kaitlyn R. Poirier, Alison K. Rose, Abigail E. Rose, Matthew H. Racca and Devin L. Racca, great granddaughter Ava R. Fragomeni, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Throughout his life Tony was active in The Union Fire District as a volunteer firefighter, Past Chairman of RI Rubber Group, Past President of The Wakefield Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow, Ducks Unlimited Member - National Trustee & Benefactor Roll of Honor, and Member of the Board of Directors of The Washington Trust Company for over 20 years. He supported The University of Rhode Island for decades from the Rose Reading Room in the library, Men’s and Women’s team sports, and the College of Business. Numerous scholarship funds, The Ryan Center, Meade Stadium, and the Anthony J. Rose Athletic Training and Sports Medicine Center all benefited from his philanthropy. He received numerous awards including induction into the University of Rhode Island Athletic Hall of Fame, Hall of Fame for the College of Business Administration in 2002, and the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2015. Tony enjoyed his family, all outdoors - hunting, fishing, skeet shooting, gardening, URI Basketball and Football, the NY Giants and his cottage in Bretton Woods. Visiting hours will be held Monday, March 28, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield, RI. Interment will be private.
