Anthony Charles Nunes

November 1, 1942 — February 26, 2023

Anthony Charles Nunes, 80, of Narragansett, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 26, 2023. He was the son of the late Arthur C. and Pauline (Boomer) Nunes. He was the husband of Simone E. Nunes-Duby for over 50 years.


Born in New Bedford, MA, as a twin, Anthony studied Physics and graduated at MIT, continuing there to get a PhD. He met his wife during a postdoctoral period at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Long Island, married and moved to Grenoble, France for two years at the Laue Langevin Research Center, before becoming Professor of Physics at the University of Rhode Island in 1976 - 2008.


He enjoyed all science news, monitoring the development of electric cars, discussing new research findings with his wife, children and brothers, singing with the Chorus of Westerly since the fall of 1977, and traveling, including two cross-country drives to LA, and many trips to Switzerland, his wife’s origin, where he even acquired a second citizenship. He was very supportive of his children and grand-children, and took great pleasure in their accomplishments.


In addition to his wife, Anthony is survived by his children, Helen (Nunes) Arnold, Christopher Nunes, Benjamin Nunes, and their families, including 9 grandchildren. He also is survived by his three brothers, Arthur, Thomas and Paul, one niece and two nephews.


Services will be private. A Memorial Celebration will be held at the Chorus Hall in Westerly in mid-June, date to be determined.
