Andrew J. Polouski,75, of Charlestown, a retired teacher, coach and active member of the Chariho School Committee, died Thursday August 11, 2011. Born in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late Michael E. and Mary Ellen (Hicks) Polouski; father of Lisabeth R. Gutierrez of Providence and Erica Van Deusen of Huntington, NY; brother of Michael E. Polouski and his wife Constance of Foster and grandfather of Lauren and Eva Gutierrez, Will and Nicole Van Deusen. He was the brother of the late Anna Mae Pryor. Mr. Polouski was a 1953 graduate of La Salle Academy, a 1957 graduate of RI College with a Bachelors of Science, received his Masters of Education from The University of Rhode Island and graduate studies at the University of Vermont. He began teaching at the Charlestown Jr. High in 1957-1958 and then at Chariho High School when it opened, where he was the head of the Mathematics Department and taught for thirty two years before retiring. He was a former athletic director and longtime coach at Chariho, North Kingstown and Westerly High Schools. He was a member of the Charlestown Town Council, an active member of NEA and was inducted into the RIAAA Hall of Fame. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:00 AM in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High St., Wakefield. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours Tuesday 4-7 PM in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Andrew J. Polouski Fund, c/o Chariho School District, 455A Switch Rd., Wood River Jct., RI 02894.
