Alvaro M. Sousa

January 12, 1930 — December 19, 2020

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Alvaro M. Sousa on December 19, 2020. He was a loving and devoted father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many. We will all miss his presence for the rest of our lives. He was in his 91st year. Born in Cambridge, MA, on January 12, 1930, to Alvaro Sousa Sr. and Laurinda (Morgan) Sousa, he experienced grief and hardship at a very young age. The oldest of five children, he lost his baby brother Joseph, mother, and father to tuberculosis when he was seven. He and his siblings Mildred, Richard and Maria were adopted by their maternal grandparents, Maria and Manuel Morgan, and raised in a Portuguese-speaking home. He placed high value on hard work, reading and education. He graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, class of 1947, then continued on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Math at Tufts University, class of 1951. He began his career as an accountant in 1955 at New England Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston, MA, and eventually rose to the position of Vice President. After his retirement in 1991, he became a Business Management Professor and taught classes at Northeastern University, along with Massasoit Community College, where he also served on the Board of Directors. In August of 1951, he married Phyllis Gosselin, and they had four children. In 1957, Alvaro and his father-in-law, Ray Gosselin, moved their families to North Easton, MA. Al is survived by his sister, Mildred Sousa Rossi, his daughter Alyson Sousa Larrabee and her husband Raymond Larrabee, his son Alan Sousa and his wife Kathleen Verhoest Sousa, his daughter, Laurinda Sousa Russo, and his daughter Amy Sousa Curtis and her husband Cliff Curtis. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Jillian Langley, Joseph Larrabee, Alan Sousa Jr, Megan Larrabee Brack, Nicholas Sousa, Anne Larrabee, and Matthew Sousa, and two great-grandchildren, Esther McKeever, and Torin McKeever. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Phyllis Gosselin Sousa, his brother Richard Sousa, his sister Maria Pereira Sousa, and his brother Joseph Sousa. Al’s love for family and friends is legendary. He often referred to himself as “the kid from East Cambridge”. Everyone who met him has an Al Sousa story. He loved sports, especially basketball, and was famous for his lefthanded hook shot. He always had impressive flower and vegetable gardens. His article ‘This Man's Tomatoes’ was published in The Boston Sunday Globe. He was a voracious reader in all literary genres, and enjoyed music. He established a weekly roundtable discussion group for residents at The Village at Waterman Lake in Greenville, RI, and was a soloist in the chorus at Brookdale South Bay in South Kingstown, RI, where he was a resident for the past few years. He was “straight out” busy with many activities throughout his life. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him and will live forever in our hearts. A celebration of his life will be held in the spring of 2021 in Easton, MA. Donations in Alvaro Sousa’s memory to the American Diabetes Association P.O. 7023 Merrifield, VA 22116-7023 and / or Hope Floats Healing and Wellness Center, 4 Elm Street, Kingston, MA 02364 are welcome.
