Allen G. Lindgren, former professor and Chairman of Electrical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island, passed away on August 15th, 2016 at Elderwood of Scallop Shell. He was the husband of Suzanne Pelletier Lindgren for the last 24 years. Born in East Islip, Long Island, New York January 1934, Allen grew up in Central Islip, attending Central Islip High School. There he was active in sports and Varsity Basketball. In 1951 he was awarded a Scholarship to Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York where he majored in Electrical Engineering. During His college days he played on the Universitys Basketball and Soccer teams, graduating Magnum Cum Laude. In 1955 he took a position with the Martin Aircraft Company in Baltimore Maryland. There he worked on project Vanguard, USAs first attempt at space exploration. In 1957 he transferred to the University of Connecticut, where he taught Electrical Engineering while studying for his PHD. In his first year of teaching he was selected by the Electrical Engineering Student Honor Society (EKN) as instructor of the year. Thus began a six-decade long career in Electrical Engineering Education. Allen and Rosemarie Eileen Daly met at the state University of New York in Potsdam NY in 1956. They married and had seven children. In 1964 he joined the Electrical Engineering Department of URI as Associate Professor teaching. His specialty was Signal & Systems Theory with Application to Control Systems and Digital Signal Processing. He was also an expert in Nonlinear System Behavior. During this time he was a Consultant to the Naval Underwater Systems Center in Newport, RI. He spent three sabbatical and 14 summers at the Institute for Signal and Information Processing (ISI) at the Swiss Institute of Technology (ETHZ) in Zurich, Switzerland, conducting workshops and performing research. Overall he directed many MS Theses and produced over 20 PHD graduates, most of whom founded companies or rose to high positions in government and industries, and universities. He retired from the University of Rhode Island in June 2000, although he continued to do Research at the Swiss Institute until 2006. He consulted with AG Scientific, his son Chips company, until 2010. Allen served as Senior Warden at St John the Divine in Saunderstown 1969-1970 and Commodore of the Saunderstown Yacht Club 1976-1977. He was a Coach for the North Kingstown Soccer Association 1975- 198 and Assistant Coach for the Little League and Babe Ruth League 1982-1985. Allen enjoyed Cat Boat racing at Wickford and Saunderstown Yacht Clubs. Most recently he was a member of the Senior Golf League at the Jamestown Country Club. For many years he enjoyed competing at the Daly Memorial Golf Tournament, a SIDS fundraising event in memory of his granddaughter, Daly Alexandra Lindgren (parents Chip and Val Lindgren). Besides his wife Suzanne, he is survived by his children from his marriage to Rosemarie Eileen Lindgren (Daly) decd. 1988: Larry Lindgren and his wife Kathryn of Yarmouth, ME, Christine Lindgren and partner Chris Adams of Boston, MA, Jeanne Lindgren of Honolulu, HI, Kathleen Kearney of Saunderstown, RI, Elizabeth Lindgren of Milford, CT, Chip Lindgren and his wife Valerie of San Diego, CA and Margaret Lindgren Newbury and her husband Phil of The Sea Ranch, CA; grandchildren, Nigel, Noel, Faith and Samuel Lindgren, step-relatives Debbie Essex, husband Butch, daughters Emma Essex, Katie Smith and husband David and daughter Brooklyn of South Kingstown and Michelle Boisvert of Peace Dale. His siblings are Ruth Nunez of Brentwood, NY and Gloria Veselitza of Levittown, NY and a brother, George Lindgren of The Villages, FL. Allens family would like to thank all his medical caregivers especially staff of The Wakefield Dialysis Clinic, South County Hospital and Elderwood of Scallop Shell. His funeral will be held on Saturday, August 20th at 10AM from the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11AM in Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Rd., Kingston. Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery. Visiting hours are Friday, August 19th 4-7PM.
