Alfred J. Iacovone, 96, of South Kingstown, passed away at home with his daughter and her family by his side on Sunday, November 11, 2018. He was the husband of the late Eileen (Finneran) Iacovone. Born in Ontario, Canada, he was the son of the late Peter and Annie (McGrath) Iacovone. Enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps soon after graduating from High School in Pawtucket, Al served in North Africa and Italy during WW II as a Technical Sergeant/Gunner with the 97th Bomb Group, Fifteenth Air Force. During his service, Al earned the Purple Heart with three oak leaf clusters. Having flown multiple missions over occupied Europe in B-17s, he became a POW when his plane was downed while bombing Augsburg in February 1945. Following his discharge from the service after the War, Al returned to reside in Rhode Island for the rest of his life. In his earlier years he enjoyed fishing and golf; and he was a lifetime fan of big band music, compiling an extensive collection of the recordings of the likes of Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, and Tommy Dorsey. In later years, Al travelled to a number of reunions attended by surviving members of his last crew; and he particularly enjoyed a 2013 flight, with members of his family, in a restored B-17 that was visiting Quonset. He is survived by his beloved daughter Theresa McKinney and her husband, Pat; his grandsons Patrick and Colin McKinney; and his brother Robert Iacovone. He was predeceased by his siblings Lawrence Iacovone, Laura Bartkiewicz, Edith Fortier and Domenic Iacovone.
