Adeline Hazard Perkins died peacefully at home on July 9th, 2011 at the age of 97. She was born December 9th, 1913 in Syracuse New York, the daughter of Isaac Peace Hazard and Katherine Monroe Burnett Hazard and the sister of William P Hazard, Jeffrey Hazard and Benjamin Hazard. In 1918 her family moved from Syracuse and took up permanent residence at The Castle, a family residence in Narragansett , RI. She was educated at home and, when the family traveled, in Europe at the Barry School in Florence Italy. On her return she attended and graduated from the Great Barrington School in Great Barrington Mass and, a talented designer, attended The Rhode Island School of Design, The Boston Museum School and the Parsons School of Design. In 1935 she participated in the Wood, Eustis, Hazard Mountaineering Expedition to the Yukon territories and at the time of her death was the last surviving member of that party. In 1936 she married Kasper M. Hodgson and moved to Maine. The marriage ended in divorce. After living and working in the fashion industry in New York, she moved to Cambridge Mass. and in 1950 married Charles B. Perkins of Wakefield, now deceased. Together they farmed sheep, ran the Pleasant St. Wharf in Wickford, RI and traveled extensively up and down the U.S. coast on the Inland Waterway. During the 1960s they roamed the Caribbean and built a home in the British Virgin Islands. Adeline is survived by her daughter, Lucy Hodgson Robinson, two grandchildren, Samuel Hodgson Robinson and Moses Hazard Robinson, her step daughters, Virginia Perkins Carter, Clara Perkins Stites, and Edna Perkins, her nephew William Peace Hazard and her niece Wren Turner Hazard as well as eight step grandchildren and fifteen step-great grandchildren. Her remaining brother, Jeffery Hazard, predeceased her in May of this year. The burial will be private. A memorial gathering to celebrate her life will be announced in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in her name to the Animal Rescue League of Southern RI, 213 Robinson Street, South Kingstown, RI 02879.
