John Gates, 61, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2024, surrounded by his children and life partner. He was the son of the late Evelyn (Holman) Gates, and Robert “Bob” Gates. John is survived by his life partner, Suzanne Wright, brothers Robert B. Gates, Peter H. Gates, sisters-in-law Jane Gates and Lillian Gates, his three children, Jessica Kalogeras, Rebecca Kalogeras, Max Gates, son-in-law Jay Wilson, and grandson, Julius Wilson. John also leaves behind his three nieces, Georgia Gates, Merrill Gates, Emily Gates, and a nephew, Corey Gates.
John was a lifetime resident of South County and was always eager to participate in the community. John held several positions as President of the Lions Club, member of the Elks Club, the South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce, the coach of various little league teams, and as Cubmaster for Pack 51 Wakefield. In addition, he was quick to lend a hand to anyone in need, often assisting during the Blessing of the Fleet, Hot Air Balloon Festival, and Kite Festival.
Those that had the pleasure of knowing him would speak of his kindness and humor. He was a man who above all enjoyed bringing warmth and joy to others. He loved decorating the Christmas tree with his family, watching classic movies, strolling the trails at Trustom Pond, watching his grandson, Julius, play sports, and traveling with his beloved, Sue, who he met after being introduced to one another by their respective dogs. Some hobbies he held begrudgingly, such as his surprise talent as a cake decorator for friends and family.
Visiting hours will be held at Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, RI, on Wednesday, May 22nd, from 4PM to 7PM. In addition, all are welcome to attend a memorial service at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 23rd, in the Peace Dale Congregational Church, 261 Columbia Street, Wakefield, RI.
