John C. McPhillips Sr.

John “Jack” C. McPhillips, Sr., 78, of Pine Tree Lane, Wakefield, RI, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, May 24, 2012, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born in 1934, in Providence, he was the son of Leonard and Leona (Nadeau) McPhillips (deceased). He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Joan (Davidson) McPhillips. He also leaves his four children Cheryl McPhillips of San Jose, CA, Carol (Ron) Andrews of Longs, SC, Cathy (Ernest) Jarbeau of Johnston, RI, and John, Jr., also of Wakefield. In addition, John had seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who loved and admired him. He also leaves behind his brother, Everett (Ori) McPhillips of Hernando, FL, as well as a dear aunt, Madeline (Nadeau) Walsh of Cranston, RI. His beloved dog, Charlie, will miss him.

Born and raised in Silver Lake in Providence, Jack moved to Wakefield twenty years ago. He retired from the Providence Journal, after 43 years of service, as the Product Operations Manager for the Distribution Department in 1995. He was very active in the Knights of Columbus as well as in other activities during his lifetime.

Jack was an avid NASCAR fan all his life. He spent many of his retirement years traveling with Joan to different racetracks on the East Coast and following his favorite drivers.

Visiting hours will be at Avery-Storti Funeral Home at 88 Columbia Street in Wakefield on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 from 4 pm to 7 pm. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 114 High Street, Wakefield, on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in West Greenwich, RI.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful hospice caregivers that helped to make Jack’s last weeks at home comfortable and peaceful.
